David Schnurr

David is a partner and registered patent and trademark agent with Miller Thomson LLP (Canada).

His practice focuses on IP and IT, and includes the provision of legal services in respect of patents, trademarks, copyright, and industrial designs, including the preparation, filing, prosecution, registration and maintenance of such applications, the preparation of patentability and trademark registrability opinions, intellectual property due diligence in corporate transactions, IT outsourcing and strategic sourcing projects, Trademarks Opposition Board and cancellation proceedings, domain name disputes, and the enforcement of intellectual property rights generally.

Notably, David has prosecuted hundreds of patent and trademark applications around the world and manages significant IP portfolios for several of the firm’s global clients. In all instances, he is committed to providing business minded and cost-effective legal services consistent with his clients' needs.

David also has extensive practice expertise in the preparation and negotiation of all manner of technology contracts, including license and end user agreements, hosting agreements, software as a service (SaaS) and other cloud computing services agreements, joint venture and development agreements, maintenance and support agreements, consulting and professional services agreements, confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements, website terms of use and privacy policies, and distribution agreements, including OEM and reseller agreements. In addition, David provides advice on legal matters relating to anti-spam law.

In 2014, David authored the Cloud Computing chapter for LexisNexis' upcoming legal textbook, Social Media and Internet Law.

David also serves as an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Law at Western University (London, Ontario, Canada), where he teaches the Advanced Intellectual Property course and is a multiple recipient of the Faculty’s Teaching Award of Excellence.

In 2008, David was seconded to assist the in-house legal department of Canada’s leading wireless communications company with its IP/IT matters. In 2012, David was the firm’s nominee for the prestigious Precedent Setter award.

David completed his law degree at Western University, where he was the recipient of the Dean of Law Entrance Scholarship and obtained highest standing in Advanced Patent Law. In his undergraduate career, David was the recipient of two Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Undergraduate Student Research Awards.
