Douglas Goold

Douglas Goold is a well-known commentator and author and the former Editor of The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business and Report on Business Magazine, as well as a long-time national columnist.As Vice President, Policy, Public Affairs and Communications, Doug is responsible for policy strategy, maintaining the Board’s strong profile and influence, and the organization’s communications strategy.

Before joining the Board, Doug was the Director of the National Conversation on Asia, one of the most ambitious and successful outreach and research initiatives in the 30 year history of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. Supported by 15 blue chip sponsors, the three year program delivered 150 events across eight provinces, worked with 20 NGOs, and led to the formation of a Futures Group on Asia, composed of the country’s leading thought leaders on Asia.

Earlier in his career, Doug succeeded the Hon. Barbara McDougall as President and CEO of the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, successfully transforming the organization into the Canadian International Council, of which he was the first president.Doug is the co-author of Peace Without Promise, a book on the peace settlements after the First World War, and The Bre-X Fraud, a national number one bestseller, which is being turned into a movie. He also wrote a book on the Canadian banks. He is a columnist for International Architecture & Design magazine and a long time judge of the National Magazine Awards.

Doug has written several widely-cited studies on doing business in India and has appeared before a Parliamentary committee on emerging economies. He has spoken across the country on a wide range of business and international issues.

Doug has a PhD in modern history from St. John's College, Cambridge. He completed two Killam Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of British Columbia, and taught at the Universities of Alberta and Victoria.Doug grew up in Peterborough. He lives in Toronto with his wife Libby Znaimer, the writer and broadcaster.
