Geneviève Berger

Geneviève B. Berger, Ph.D., M.D. has been the Chief Science Officer of Unilever NV and Unilever plc since July 2008.

Geneviève Berger served as the Chief Research and Development Officer at Unilever plc and Unilever NV from June 2008 to January 2012. Geneviève Berger was a Director of the Biotech and Agri-Food Department of the French Ministry for Education, Research and Technology from 1998 to 2000. Geneviève Berger was the Head of the Technology Directorate of the French Ministry of Research since 2000.

She also served as Director General of the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) from 2000 to 2003. She served as Chairman of the Health Advisory Board for the European Commission from 2006 to 2008.

She was an Independent Non-Executive Director of Smith & Nephew, Inc.; and Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics Ltd., since March 2010. Prof. Berger served as a Non-Executive Director at Unilever NV from May 16, 2007 to June 30, 2008 and Unilever plc from May 16, 2007 to June 2008. She served as an Independent Non-Executive Director at Smith & Nephew plc from March 5, 2010 to November 1, 2012.

She serves as a Member of the Technical Program Committee at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers on ultrasonics, ferroelectrics and frequency control. Her many honours and awards include the CNRS Silver Medal for the Life Sciences in 1994, Yves Rocard Prize from the French Physics Society in 1997, the European Grand Prix for Innovation Award in 2001 and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) Honorary Fellow Award in 2006.

She has been Professor and Hospital Practitioner of La Pitié-Salpétrière Teaching Hospital since 2003. She has been a Non-Executive Director of AstraZeneca Plc since April 26, 2012.

She served as Professor of Biophysics and Medical Imaging of Paris University VI. & Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris) I, since 1996. Geneviève Berger educated in Physics and Medicine.

She completed a Physics degree in 1977. She is a Medical Doctor with PhD in Human Biology and Theoretical & Applied Mechanical Physics from the University of Paris.
