Waran is an animal behavior and welfare scientist. She is Professor of Animal Welfare and the inaugural Director of the Jeanne Marchig International Centre for Animal Welfare Education at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh. Professor Waran received her zoology degree from Glasgow University and Ph.D. from Cambridge University Veterinary School. She is an advisor to a number of international governments and NGOs and works with the veterinary profession in various parts of the world.
