Nicholas Negroponte is the chairman of One Laptop per Child, a non-profit organization whose mission is to create and distribute a low cost laptop to millions of children in poor countries around the world, ultimately revolutionizing how these children are educated. A prototype was unveiled by Kofi Annan and Mr. Negroponte at the World Economic Forum in 2005. The project is funded by Google, Red Hat, AMD, Brightstar Corporation, News Corporation and Nortel Networks, among other companies.

Mr. Negroponte is currently on leave from MIT, where he was co-founder and director of the MIT Media Laboratory and the Jerome B. Wiesner Professor of Media Technology. An Internet pioneer, he is author of the 1995 best seller, Being Digital which has been translated into more than 40 languages.

In the private sector, Mr. Negroponte serves on the board of directors for Motorola, Inc. and Ambient Devices. He has provided start-up funds for Wired magazine, Zagats, Ambient Devices and management's first venture, thePit.com.
