Nir Hacohen

Dr. Hacohen is an immunologist and geneticist focused on dissecting the basic mechanisms of pathogen-sensing by the immune system, pioneering genetic technologies that accelerate the study of the immune system, and deciphering and treating human diseases, especially immune disorders, based on genomic approaches.

Hacohen’s research has shown that dendritic cells of the immune systems turn on tailored genetic programs in response to distinct threats, enabling the immune system to distinguish viruses, bacteria, and fungi. By integrating genomic and proteomic approaches, his group has analyzed mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions, identified pathways that control the innate immune response to bacteria and viruses, and characterized genes involved in the development of autoimmune diseases. His current work focuses on developing a systems immunology approach to the study and manipulation of the immune system in humans.

He is also a founding member of the Broad Institute’s RNAi Consortium, a public-private partnership that is building genome-wide RNA interference libraries to silence every gene in mice and humans, and a founding director of the Broad Immune Circuits Initiative. As a result of these efforts, a large community of researchers has been using RNAi technologies to address numerous biological and immunological questions.

Dr. Hacohen is an Associate Professor at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and a Senior Associate Member at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
