Bio

Dr. Pradip. Kumar Roy is a prolific inventor of numerous commercially and technologically significant patents. He is a recognized world authority in ultra-thin gate dielectrics and layering processes in microelectronics with unprecedented impact on device scaling, cost, and reliability.

Dr. Roy received his B. Tech. (Hons.) in Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering in 1964 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Thereafter he joined the National Metallurgical Laboratory as a Senior Research Fellow. He then obtained his M.Sc. in Materials and Solid State Engineering in 1967 from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. He was formerly with Agere Systems (formerly Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies) from 1982 – 2002 after his Ph.D. from Columbia University and post-doctoral work at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center. He later on did a Mini-MBA in General Management in 1996 from the Wharton School of Business, USA.

As a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, Dr. Roy has made significant contributions to process technology development at Bell Labs. His pioneering work on Stacked Oxide, has generated worldwide attention in state-of-the-art microprocessors. He extended the “stacking” concept and developed the world’s first MOSFET (1997) fabricated via stacked high-k gate dielectrics. From July 2002 – Dec.2003, he worked at Tokyo Electron (TEL) as a Senior Technical Advisor to provide technology vision and guidance for various modules in sub-90 nm technologies. From March 2002 he was honored as a visiting scholar/professor by MIT for the development of stacked pseudo binary ferroelectrics to couple III-V materials with silicon substrates. Presently he is also an adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University to evaluate the onset of tunneling & band offsets in thin dielectrics using 2nd harmonic generations and internal photo emissions.

In Jan.2004 he founded a fully funded start-up ‘Neopad Technologies Corporation’ for developing and designing nanomaterial technology products. Neopad’s first product line is a tribologically graded polymeric pad used during Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) in today’s silicon IC manufacturing. Such functionally graded pads are expected to have significant commercial and technological impact in sub-100 nm silicon ICs, large area display, disk drive and micromachine (MEMS) industries.
