Robert Gelbard

Ambassador Robert Gelbard is the Board Member at Raydiance Inc.

Robert Gelbard is an international business consultant specializing in crisis management, risk analysis and project development and implementation. He is also a consultant to the Institute for Defense Analyses, the Department of Defense’s primary think tank, and a member of Senior Defense Advisory Boards.

During his prior career in the United States Foreign Service, he held numerous senior foreign policy positions, including as the President’s Special Representative for the Balkans, Ambassador to Indonesia and Bolivia, Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Inter -American Affairs.

His other Foreign Service assignments included Porto Alegre, Brazil, Manila, Republic of the Philippines and Paris, France.

Gelbard also was a staff member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors.

Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Gelbard was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia. During his career in the Foreign Service, Gelbard received the Presidential Meritorious Award, the State Department’s Distinguished Service Award, the United States Coast Guard’s Distinguished Public Service Award and numerous other commendations.

He was awarded the Condor of the Andes, Order of the Grand Cross, Bolivia’s highest decoration for a foreign citizen, and the Medalha do Gaucho, by the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Ambassador Gelbard is a member of the Boards of Directors of L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc., Raydiance, Inc., P.T. Toba Bara (Indonesia). He is the Member Of The Boards of Advisors of Good Technology, Inc. and Atlas International Investments. He is also a Senior Advisor to the Board of Kreab Gavin Anderson (London/Stockholm), and S/A Comunicacao (Sao Paulo).

His non-profit activities include the Board of Trustees of Colby College, the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the Atlantic Council, the Boards of Directors of Phelps Stokes and the US-Serbia Business Council, Chairman of the Board of Advisors of the International Institute for Security and Cooperation (Bulgaria) and the Board of Advisors of the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Gelbard is a graduate of Colby College and has a Masters Degree from Harvard University. He holds honorary LL.D. degrees from Villanova University Law School and from Colby College for his work on peacekeeping and international democracy-building.

Gelbard was a member of the Obama-Biden Presidential National Security Transition Team and a foreign policy advisor to President Barack Obama during his election campaign.
