Bio

Tom Rutledge is the Executive Chairman at Charter Communications. He was a former COO at Cablevision Systems.

As a chief operating officer of Cablevision Systems Corporation, Tom Rutledge is responsible for overseeing the company's telecommunications business; cable television, high-speed data, and voice; and Lightpath, the company's all Ethernet carrier-grade business provider – all branded as Optimum Networks. He also oversees Cablevision Media Sales and its suite of advanced advertising products, Clearview Cinemas, and the company's local media properties, which include News 12 Networks, MSG Varsity, and two of the nation's largest daily newspapers, Newsday and amNewYork.

Mr. Rutledge joined Cablevision in 2002. Since then, Cablevision completed a multi-billion dollar transition to an all-digital, fiber optic network passing nearly 6.0 million homes and businesses in the tri-state area in and around New York City and the Rocky Mountain States of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah.

Under Mr. Rutledge, Cablevision has also built the nation's largest and most advanced WiFi network, which provides wireless broadband across its service area, and launched pioneering interactive and addressable advertising services. As the first cable company to deploy a VoIP phone product across its entire service area, Cablevision is now the largest phone provider where it does business. Most recently, the company deployed the nation's first residential high-speed Internet service that exceeds 100 megabits-per-second, the nation's first remote-storage DVR, and is the first cable provider to deliver to customers full in-home cable TV service over an iPad.

A 34-year cable, media, and business industry veteran, Mr. Rutledge previously served as president of Time Warner Cable. He began his industry career in 1977 at American Television and Communications (ATC), a predecessor company of Time Warner Cable, starting as a management trainee after graduating from college.

Mr. Rutledge currently serves on the board of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA). He served as Chairman of the NCTA from 2008-2010 and currently serves on the boards of CableLabs, C-SPAN, and the CTAM Educational Foundation. In 2011, he received NCTA's Vanguard Award for Distinguished Leadership, the cable industry's highest honor. He is a member of the Cable Hall of Fame and will be inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame this year. He received his bachelor of administration in economics from California University in California, PA in 1977.
